The “excerpts” project is about the predictable and unpredictable messages conveyed by the installation artworks which interact with media of the exhibition site, i.e., the artist, the books, the covers and the words written inside, to redefine the identities of the viewers .
Audience selects a book at the bookstore site. The book may have been read by him/her before and well-liked; or it may just be casually seen but the cover gives a special feeling for him/her; or it may be a book he/she owned and then borrowed by others. The audience brings the books to the site of art studio, turn the leaves and cover his/her faces with the books. Allow me to photo their portraits. Then, from the randomly selected page, he/she shall select a paragraph of the text. This paragraph will be imprinted on the back of his/hers portrait, much like a stage line. Afterward, I will append a message that I “read” when I saw this person to the end of the paragraph.
I am much intrigued by the incidences and casual encounters occurring in our daily scenes; just like you’ll never know which sentence in the book will become your line--an excerpt of your life segment.
